Margit Burmeister in her studio in Rhode Island

I work with both paper and wood to create abstract, non-objective paintings. I begin with hand-painted papers or reclaimed wood, incorporating elements of historical typography and integrating various found pieces. The joy of the process lies in the careful layering of the materials, as the discovery of a bold shape, a beautifully jagged edge, or the remnants of previous layers directs the composition

As a former graphic designer, my paintings bear the influence of grids and typography. The resulting pieces possess a sense of order and balance, although I strive to include surprising elements that disrupt complete symmetry.

During the pandemic in 2020, we moved to Rhode Island to quarantine. Suddenly, I had unlimited time to pursue art for the first time after my work career and raising our family. My fine art had been dormant for decades and re-emerged in those dark days of Covid.

Margit earned a BFA from Syracuse University in Graphic Design.  She pursued a career as a graphic designer in New York.  After living most of her life in New York she now lives on the south coast of Rhode Island.  A lifelong artist, Margit has been painting full time since 2020.

Margit has exhibited at art centers throughout the region and United States.

“Art is a daily practice… a commitment to the process.”
