my Spain adventure.

In October 2024 I traveled to Spain to take the workshop “Filter and Focus” with the great artists Terri Froelich and Susan Melrath. I spent a week with 13 others painting all day and enjoying great dinners together in the evening.

I was taken with the historic tiles everywhere, especially in Seville. It wasn’t evident to me then, but when I got home I kept thinking about the repetitive shapes and their weathered edges, although they were remarkably bright and vivid for tiles hundreds of years old. It prompted my recent series “Azulejo” (tiles).  The paintings are mixed media; using historic ledger paper from the 1930s, painted old linen shapes and some twine interspersed. They’re bumpy, irregular and have layers and layers of color history. It’s been a fun adventure.

So what’s next? Another trip? Not right now. I’m happy seeing the Rhode Island coastline and being home. I think I’ll look for inspiration out my window.
